Garden Updates (June 10, 2020)

Garden Updates (June 10, 2020)

Well, it’s June and things are still a little dicey. Many of the vegetable seedlings I planted died during the freakish cold snaps that occurred last month. Mother’s Day used to be *the* day to the set out seedlings, but it seems Memorial Day is now the safer option. (((Climate change)))

The peas, green beans, kale, and lettuce plants seem to be doing the best right now. The tomatoes are catching up and have put on many new leaves, the cucumbers are looking a little anemic, but today they seemed better, so we’ll see. If not, I will purchase some cucumber seedlings if I can find any!

I have been sowing seeds here and there as I pull away dead and dying plants. Since I’m completely insane I haven’t been labeling anything I sow, so everything coming up within the next two weeks will be a surprise. I like surprises.

The grape vine is growing well even though I have no idea what I’m doing. I pruned it a few months ago and immediately panicked thinking I took off too much, but right now it’s lush and vining like crazy, and there are baby grapes! The blackberry bush is starting to flower and fruit, which is great too!

I’ve been weeding the front garden like a madwoman and it has really paid off. I have some pictures below of one side of the front garden and it looks so organized (well, to my standards). Since we had more time during the quarantine, we actually fixed up the alley behind my house by putting down some paver tiles and rocks on top of a layer of contractor bags. This alley was keeping me up at night because poison ivy loves this alley and I needed a way to get in there and pull it before it went through the neighbor’s fence #Imabetterneighbornow. I’ve also found 3 small Joe Pye weed plants growing around the yard and like a someone diving down to pick up a stray dollar, I immediately dove down, pulled it out and potted it up. I transplanted one into the alley and I’m hoping it will liven up the area.

I haven’t seen any butterflies except for the occasional sulfur butterfly. I’ve seen a couple of bees and a damselfly, but that’s it. Where are all the bugs?? I hate bugs and even I am worried that there aren’t enough bugs. I have a ton of milkweed and other pollinator plants just waiting to be discovered…and once they do I will stress about my neighor’s landscapers spraying chemicals on them. Oh well, we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. That’s it for now. Next Month’s update will be really colorful.

Please enjoy these pictures of my garden:
