4 Garden-themed Movies for a Rainy Day

Like everyone else during this pandemic, I’ve been watching a lot of movies on Netflix and Prime Video. I came across a few garden-themed movies that I really enjoyed and thought I’d share them with you for a rainy day.

  1. The Gardener (2018)

This is a movie about Frank Cabot’s garden in Quebec, Canada. Frank Cabot was a horticulturist and garden preservationist, and he built many themed gardens on his huge estate in Quebec which he named Les Quatre Vents (the four winds). The gardens are stunning and there are several notable architectural features, like the moon bridge and the Pigeonnaire (which by the way I may just pack a bag and go live out the rest of my life in there because it’s so beautiful). My favorite quote in the movie is by Frank Cabot himself when speaking about the effect his garden has on visitors, “Gardens satisfy a need in humans, I think, that not everybody recognizes or has.”

2. Portrait of a Garden (2015)

This film follows a historic Dutch garden through the changing seasons. This is a documentary but there are no interviews, just experienced staff doing gardening tasks and working together to prune fruit trees, prune grape vines, tend to the vegetable garden, and much more. It’s a fascinating window into how this garden has been managed for the past few centuries. Films like this make you want to sell everything and move to the countryside to start your very own mega garden.

3. Adaptation (2002)

This is one of my favorite movies. Nicolas Cage plays himself and his twin! The twins are both screenwriters and one of them is hired to adapt a book about orchids into a film. The movie goes down lots of dark alleys and has some major twists, but it is worth the watch especially if you have dark humor like I do. This film is rated R and NSFW (not safe for work).

4. The Garden (2017)

This German movie is a little strange but it’s so true to life and realistic that it brings back many memories of a childhood that most children today will never experience. In the movie, several generations of a family spend a summer together in the home of their recently deceased relative. The kids are given free reign to explore the garden and the nearby forest eventhough there is a psycho child killer on the loose. If you enjoy foreign films like I do, this is a good watch. Just FYI: This film is NSFW and there is nudity in the trailer.

Find all these movies on Prime Video. They’re offering a 30 day free trial!

Well, there you have it. I will write another post when I find more garden themed movies that really move me. I would love to hear your film recommendations.
